Sustainable value chains in Kenya

Project title: Farming the Future. Sustainable value chains in agriculture for ASALs in Kenya

Funded by: Italian Agency for Development Cooperation (AICS)

Lead agency: Institute for Peace Development and Innovation (IPSIA)

Country: Kenya

Overall term: 2019-2022 (36 months)

Pastoralist and agro-pastoralist households in the ASALs are especially vulnerable to the risk posed by climate change. When a drought occurs, households often cope with large losses by selling their remaining livestock and reducing meals, strategies that diminish household productivity and result in irreversible stunting in young children. The AICS-funded project Farming the Future has been promoting the resilience and self-reliance of the Laikipia County communities in Kenya by improving the economic conditions of women-led agro-pastoral groups in the Sub-county of Laikipia North over 3 years. The project is doing so by diversifying agricultural production and increasing the profitability of micro-business activities. The Farming the Future project is led by IPSIA and works extensively on food and nutrition security, water access, agronomic support in arid areas, the transformation of agricultural produce, as well as tourism.

ENV will serve the AICS-funded Action from the beginning of its implementation in December 2019 to its end in 2022. Our experts have assessed the project baseline, trained the consortium staff on MEAL, household-level surveys, and the external midterm evaluation. We will furthermore provide the final evaluations of the Farming the Future project.

Access to water in Kenya

Increasing variation in Kenya’s climate is evident. These set of four BMZ-funded projects aimed to promote a resilient approach to water and farm management in South-eastern Kenya. ENV conducted the ex-post evaluation of the four projects.

Forest restoration in Colombia

Around 2 million people depend on the freshwater supplied by this Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta in Colombia. Since 2015, our experts have been visiting the region to assess the needs of rural communities, design development strategies, and promote sustainable forest management.

Youth employment in Brasil

Youth unemployment is a huge challenge for Latin America. This EU-funded project is providing professional training and promoting youth employment in Salvador de Bahia, Brazil. Our expert Marta Sachy conducted the evaluation of the TCHAU Project
